CURRENT ISSUE OF THE DAY

“The Environment”

Rev. Ron’s Comments:

As a Liberal Christian, I believe that the power of God exists in everything, everywhere in this universe and beyond.  That God is omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience.  There is no spot where God is not.  We as humans are also part of God, not only in a physical way, but spiritually as well.  We are expressions of a spiritual energy that lives, moves, and has its being in each and every one of us.  And that energy is love, because God is absolute love.  Therefore, everything on and in this earth is sacred and it is our responsibility as caretakers of this earth to be good stewards in the way we treat every aspect of it.

In my opinion, we are not being good stewards or caretakers when material wealth becomes more important than preserving our natural environment and its resources.  We should be doing everything possible to reverse air pollution that is causing global warming.  Just about every scientist out there today has come to the conclusion that global warming is a reality.  Yet we have an administration in power today in our country that still refuses to believe it is so.  It refuses to participate in global warming conferences and turns a deaf ear to the voices expressing alarm.  There can be only one reason, and that is to protect the interests of the large industries that are causing the pollution.  Money is the issue, not the environment.

Many top experts in this country are projecting that we will use up our oil resources in this earth in 30-40 years unless we find other means of producing energy.  Yet instead of offering greater incentives to industry to develop alternate resources, we want to open more off-shore oil drilling and start new drilling in the preserved area of Alaska.  There is no end to which the majority of current leaders in the United States will go to preserve the status quo of the largest guzzlers of energy in the world.  Other countries, especially in Europe are doing much more to develop alternate energy production than we are.

Every creature on this earth is sacred.  Yet time and again we continue to do things to the environment that causes extinction to some species of wildlife.  Uncontrolled logging, housing developments, more infrastructure all tend to extinguish forms of wildlife that have been on this earth for thousands and millions of years.  We treat them without consideration as to their sacredness.

We dump our nuclear waste into the oceans and into the earth.  Our garbage will have nowhere to go in a few short years.  Do we give enough incentives to develop the technology to incinerate our garbage and create another source of energy?  It doesn’t appear that way.

As a Liberal Christian I am extremely concerned that we are not doing enough to protect the environment, a gift we have been given, but one that we will destroy if significant action isn’t taken soon.  I will cast my vote in the elections only for those individuals who take this issue seriously.
